world on a finger

I have loved doing this blog over the past couple of months but I have to move to more pressing issues in my life and career. In trying to Change the World I need to begin taking more action which is what I plan to do.

I am going to have this post up for a few days with a final message.

Look outside yourself. I have written many posts on being introverted or extroverted and various charities, groups and organizations; about character and humanity; about people and the way the world interacts with you and you the world.

My idea I want to present to you now is to see the extroversion inside of you (isn’t that a contradictory statement). I have said before that there are people who can travel the world and be in incredible places and experiences and not even look outside themselves.

The reason I love to stare up at the stars or watch the sun rise and set is because it reminds me of my place in the universe. I am nothing without those around me as far reaching as the other side of the world. A person is nothing without other people. To look only within yourself is to not except the power and importance of those who you may not even know.

To live solely for yourself is vain but to live for yourself and the world is empowering. Helping those outside your own comfort zone actually has benefits for all, including yourself. The Golden Rule is called golden for a reason.

As I sit here outside by a fire, after having a long-and-great conversation with an old friend who just left (came to keep me company while I am sick), I remember the most important aspect of my life is other people. Without them life would be meaningless so to devote myself to others brings me great and fulfilling Life Meaning.

I say tomorrow, you wake up and do your usual routine. Drink your coffee; tread mill for fifteen minutes; whatever. But then during that day I want you to try something. Try following an old rule of the Boy Scouts and do a good deed for someone else in that day. A good turn for someone else in the long run is a good turn for the world and yourself.

It does not have to be a great and powerful showing to your fellow man but a simple gesture of selflessness can bring a great change if done enough by enough people. It could even Change the World.

To keep up with me in the future head over to my personal blog WarrenGreeley.com/Blog to read my future posts. They are on topics of business, writing, and generally trying to change the world.

Thank you for reading. Thanks for caring.

shooting for the stars

Stary sky

Many people will tell you to aim low when starting something. This allows you to hit goals fast and build new goals. This is a great concept to follow except it has great limitation on what is possible and what you are striving for.

Instead a concept you can try is the exact opposite of this. Shooting for the stars. Aim higher than even rationally conceivable and you probably won’t get there. That is OK though. Just by trying you may get farther than if you set your goal low.

By aiming to hit a higher target you are motivated to work more to reach your larger goal.

sunset on the pacific

Sometimes in life you go through slumps. It is part of the inevitable cycle no matter who you are. So what do you do when life gets you down and you just have too much on your plate? I recently had to figure this out all over again and I want to share it with you as well.

The key I have found to getting back on track is simplification. Simplifying your daily life can give you much more time to heal and get back on track.

There are many ways to do this but the most important part is finding what you care about most and dropping the rest. We cannot do everything all the time and need time to ourselves to stay sane.

First step is to realize everything you are constantly doing in your life. I would say even write it down to help you organize. Once you have realized what make up your busy life you can start figuring out what can go. On my personal blog I write about one thing I have done which is limiting my blog consumption. That is a minor step, yes, but little things at a time you reduce from your daily intake can really help you find time to work on yourself and your problems. Here are a few other thing you may want to consider while simplifying.

No more drive through. In spite of what everyone thinks, the drive through is not faster. It is nearly always faster to park, get out of your car (which is good just by itself), and talk to people instead of a speaker box.

Simplify your living space. Taking out the clutter can reduce stress and leave less to clean up. Saving time so you can relax. See more on this through my article “zen space.”

Purposely don’t get something done. This is a stretch to some people but making sure something less important doesn’t get done in your day can really help. Instead spend the time relaxing or just taking a breath. The more you do this the more you will start to realize not everything has to be done right now.

Take one day. Change your schedule to allow at least on day a week for yourself or just spending time relaxing with family or close friends. No going out; nothing with stress potential. I recommend reading a book, though that is a lost art now a days.

Have conversations. Conversations with close friends, family, or even strangers are a great way to bring to life realizations you could not have otherwise. There is so much you can learn about yourself, others, and life in general just by deep - uninterrupted conversation.

Cut the line. All communications are products of human invention. They are not necessary and especially are not needed in your pocket or hand at all times. Try turning off the computer (emails can drive a man to murder), Unplugging the phone line, turning off the cell, and take time to ponder your thoughts or get the simple things done that seem so hard to accomplish with everything else.

Lastly is a tip very personal to me.

Watch a sunrise and/or sun set. There is nothing more profound to allow you to realize your place in the world then the rising and setting of the sun (why I chose a sunset over the pacific as my header image on this blog). As long as that sun keeps rising and setting your life will go on and things will get better. Take the time and try it. While watching this remarkable phenomenon just ponder the greatness of life because it is truly incredible.

Thanks to zen habits for the inspiration. Thanks to Blogrrl for the support.

zen space (half way there)

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

For the newer readers, I wrote a post a while back about clearing the clutter from my living and working space. As an update I am about half way done and have cleared out much of the unneeded items in my bedroom. It is already quite a change and is much more relaxing.

Ill be posting the finished product when completed; which will hopefully be soon.

In the mean time be sure to check out the origin of my idea at the Zen Habits blog.

I got a laugh out of this one even though I feel bad for the poor girl. Now she is subjected to blogs like my own and ones who will be less simpathetic than myself. None the less this is a great example of acting (in this case talking) without thought; something I wrote about a little while back.

Sorry lass. All I can say is that there are always better days around the corner.

make life easier with communication

people at airport

Yesterday I wrote a post called “ask questions?” that addressed excellent strategy when talking to new people in business or your personal life. Today I want to move back even further to communication with complete strangers that is not meant to form relationship.

When you are in a public facility there will be many situations that need communication and yet the majority of people are too afraid to say even the simplest things to strangers like “Hello” or “Excuse me” that would benefit tremendously.

When I was am in a public place I always get a chuckle out of seeing people just stand and wait for someone to move out of the way when it would be so easy to just say “Excuse me” and end the dilemma.

So why are people like this? From what I can gather people are just generally afraid of what is unknown to them. This includes new places, new environments, and especially new faces. This is just natural behavior for some people but can cause them much grief in simple situations with strangers.

The key I have found useful is to be conscious of this when in a new place or a place that there are new people. Your urge to not talk to new people is a subconscious attribute and can be overcome simply by thinking about it as a situation may present itself.

Using this simple technique can allow you to be more conscious in your day, avoid simple problems, and even maybe spark a good conversation with someone new.
