now, there’s no excuse to be sad

In my senior year philosophy class, my teacher and high school mentor, Mr. Charlie Kern, taught us a little trick that is good for those who are feeling down. He taught us that we can easily force ourselves to be happy.

So here is the secret. All you have to do is smile. Yep, that’s right. If you make yourself smile you can actually trick your brain into thinking that you are happy. I know it sounds crazy but it is something that was studied and proven by researchers (though I don’t have any links to back that up).

It is something you can try yourself though. I know that smiling when your sad is not the easiest thing but next time you are down try to will yourself to crack a smile and hold it. You may find that you end up feeling better from it. If you don’t leave me a post yelling at me because you are still upset.

It is absolutely true. Another thing that works is saying things out loud in a convincing voice, such as, “I am so happy to be at work today!”, thus actually making yourself happy. The thing that doesn’t work is convincing people that you’re not nuts, so I don’t do it very often….

In addition to Bloggrrl’s comment, we were taught in Speech class about “auto-suggestion” which is what she was writing about. You could go into class or a situation saying “I can do this. I can get through this” or whatever it is that you want to accomplish, and it helps you out in those cases/instances as well.
