Sometimes in life you go through slumps. It is part of the inevitable cycle no matter who you are. So what do you do when life gets you down and you just have too much on your plate? I recently had to figure this out all over again and I want to share it with you as well.
The key I have found to getting back on track is simplification. Simplifying your daily life can give you much more time to heal and get back on track.
There are many ways to do this but the most important part is finding what you care about most and dropping the rest. We cannot do everything all the time and need time to ourselves to stay sane.
First step is to realize everything you are constantly doing in your life. I would say even write it down to help you organize. Once you have realized what make up your busy life you can start figuring out what can go. On my personal blog I write about one thing I have done which is limiting my blog consumption. That is a minor step, yes, but little things at a time you reduce from your daily intake can really help you find time to work on yourself and your problems. Here are a few other thing you may want to consider while simplifying.
No more drive through. In spite of what everyone thinks, the drive through is not faster. It is nearly always faster to park, get out of your car (which is good just by itself), and talk to people instead of a speaker box.
Simplify your living space. Taking out the clutter can reduce stress and leave less to clean up. Saving time so you can relax. See more on this through my article “zen space.”
Purposely don’t get something done. This is a stretch to some people but making sure something less important doesn’t get done in your day can really help. Instead spend the time relaxing or just taking a breath. The more you do this the more you will start to realize not everything has to be done right now.
Take one day. Change your schedule to allow at least on day a week for yourself or just spending time relaxing with family or close friends. No going out; nothing with stress potential. I recommend reading a book, though that is a lost art now a days.
Have conversations. Conversations with close friends, family, or even strangers are a great way to bring to life realizations you could not have otherwise. There is so much you can learn about yourself, others, and life in general just by deep - uninterrupted conversation.
Cut the line. All communications are products of human invention. They are not necessary and especially are not needed in your pocket or hand at all times. Try turning off the computer (emails can drive a man to murder), Unplugging the phone line, turning off the cell, and take time to ponder your thoughts or get the simple things done that seem so hard to accomplish with everything else.
Lastly is a tip very personal to me.
Watch a sunrise and/or sun set. There is nothing more profound to allow you to realize your place in the world then the rising and setting of the sun (why I chose a sunset over the pacific as my header image on this blog). As long as that sun keeps rising and setting your life will go on and things will get better. Take the time and try it. While watching this remarkable phenomenon just ponder the greatness of life because it is truly incredible.
